So, where to start? Let’s see… In september 2015 I started my first year at university. I chose to study psychology in Ghent, and therefore had to move to a new city. On weekdays I lived in a students building, during the weekends I went home (which is a little village in Antwerp). I’ve always been into cooking and experimenting with food, so having to cook for myself four days a week certainly wasn’t a problem. I even looked forward to it.
One of the first things I noticed once I had to do my own grocery shopping, was the fact that meat is quite expensive. From day one I just didn’t feel the urge to buy it for myself, and that’s why I automatically started cooking a lot of vegetarian dishes. Just trying out new recipes and leaving the meat behind.
I was very lonely during the first month of living as a uni student. I instantly made some new friends, but once classes were done, I was just sat alone in my dorm room, cooking way too much food for one person most of the time. Luckily, after a few weeks, an amazing person crossed my way, which kind of changed everything.
Once I got together with my partner in (love-)crime, meat was totally out of the picture during the weekdays. The love of my life turned out to be a vegetarian, who hates cooking, and therefore from that moment on I took a further plunge in the world of vegetarian food. During the weekends, at home, I still got meat on my plate. At first I didn’t mind that much, but the longer I dated my boyfriend, the more I started realising how cruel the meat industry is. I started enjoying meat less and less, and so eventually, on 14 February 2016 (what a beautiful day) I decided to officially stop eating meat. I became a vegetarian.
I was proud and happy, and so was my boyfriend. Everyday I tried out new recipes and products, and a whole world opened up for us. In just a couple months time we tried so many new things, we just kept on loving being a vegetarian more and more. I was so happy to be able to make a difference for our planet, the animals that live on it, and for myself. It felt like (and it still does) the best decision ever.
But after a couple months, we started realising being a vegetarian is just a big step towards something way bigger. It’s a start, but it’s not enough. Apart from the meat industry, there are other conditions in which animals get to suffer a lot. A very important one: the diary industry. All the delicious cheese, yoghurt and milk you get to eat and drink, becomes dirty and disgusting once you know what had to happen to get it in your fridge. Although we used a lot of plant-based diary substitutes already, we got more and more guilty feelings over the use of other diary products every single day. Which caused that after about a year, it just didn’t feel right anymore.
And so, that’s why we decided, near the end of 2016, that we had to make the jump towards the top of the tree. From 1 January 2017 on, we would go VEGAN!
