Chickpea “tuna” spread.

I’ve noticed a couple times already that many new vegans find it hard to figure out what to eat on their bread. It always surprises me, because that’s something that’s never been an issue for us. That’s why today I’ve decided to share a very easy recipe to make your own “tuna” like spread at home. I hope it can inspire people to eat more various things on their bread 🙂

I know a lot of vegans prepare their own spreads, and hummus probably being the number one to go with. I must admit that I buy most of our lunch spreads at the local supermarket, as their vegan assortiment has grown quite a lot already. As we’ve got quite some stuff to choose from each week, deciding what to eat on our bread has never been an issue yet. But it seems that it’s not that easy for everyone, so that’s why it’s nice to know that you can also easily make your own delicious spreads at home. Chickpea still being one of my favorite things to use, but wanting to eat something else than hummus from time to time, this tuna like salad can be a really nice change.

I was so surprised the first time I tried this out. Never would I have thought that chickpeas could taste a bit like tuna. I still don’t know how that happens, but I know it’s very tasty and easy to make and after all that’s all that matters 😉 I used a store-bought vegan mayonnaise this time, but of course you can perfectly use homemade mayonnaise in this recipe as well. If you’re planning to prepare your own mayonnaise, make sure to keep in mind not to throw away the chickpea liquid! You can still find the recipe for easy and delicious mayonnaise over here.

I’ve added some shredded nori to the spread to give it an even more “fishy” taste. You can also add some whole chickpeas to the spread, to make it a bit rougher. And last but not least, it also makes a perfect combination with sweet peach 🙂

  • What do you need? (one small jar)
    – 1 can of chickpeas
    – 4 tablespoons of vegan mayonnaise
    – 1/2 nori leave (shredded)
    – Salt and pepper
    – Optionally: 1 teaspoons of toasted sesame oil


  • How do you make it?
    Drain the chickpeas and rinse them with cold water. Add to a blender or food processor together with the mayonnaise. Blend until you’ve gained a smooth texture. Add some salt, pepper and the shredded nori and pulse through. If you like, add some sesame oil and pulse through again. Simple as that!Put a thick layer of this spread on a slice of bread and optionally finish off with some salad, tomatoes, avocado or sweet peach. Also works perfect as a dip! 🙂 I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
